The theme for this contest piece was “The Past Holds The Future, The Future Holds The Past”. My illustration depicts the concept of passing wisdom (kinaadman) from one generation to the next.
Since Filipino culture is strongly rooted in oral tradition; passing down wisdom through stories where in their simplest forms become folktales and songs, I've interpreted the theme through a representation of Lola Basyang as a seasoned narrator who imparts her stories to the next generation of storytellers.
The future is symbolized by a youth framed with a phone shaped window and similar technological icons, inheriting the little fire of wisdom from the past; framed by resilient tree branches and an aged cathedral window. Both parties openly face each other with warm smiles, their hands delicately holding on the little candle as it moves between them.
